Akanke felt her breath catch at the shortening of her name. She watched him walk away and dropped her head to hide the smile that she could not stop. The man was impossible. Bringing her coffee and flirting. As if she was going to fall for that! But somehow the morning seemed brighter and the day passed quickly. She even stopped looking over her shoulder and worrying about the mystery phone call. If she had the boss on her side then surely she would be alright.

Later that day he came over again and sat on the side of her desk.

“Do you know anywhere decent to eat around here?” he asked, his eyebrows rose in question.

Akanke couldn’t think of anywhere she had eaten that would be good enough for him, but there was a diner she liked. They did good pie, and one of the waitresses went to her church. But it had been a long time since she had the time or money for eating out so she shook her head.

“Then maybe I will just have to cook for you one night,” he said.

Her eyes had flown open wide and she had laughed at that.

“Yes,” he said. “I can cook and even though I am used to MRE’s and campfire cooking, I’m actually a pretty good cook. Now, why don’t you come over Friday night and let me show you?”

For a moment, she almost said yes, but then she remembered the hospital and her Mom who would be waiting. This was not the right time in her life to start dating. And even if it was this was not a Godly man. “I’m sorry Mr. Nelson, but I have other plans,” she managed.

“Well I am going to keep asking and one day I will wear down that cool façade and find whatever you are hiding underneath,” he said before he turned and walked back to his office.

This banter carried on each day and she found herself looking forward to it. As she left, he would often be going to his car at the same time. Little did she know that he followed her to the hospital and then home. Most nights he slept in the car, leaving at dawn to grab a shower and arrive at the office at the same time as she did.
